Our Mission

Mission Statement:

Math ROCks is an organization that makes learning math free and accessible to all students regardless of identity. We are a place where experienced tutors meet curious students to create ideas that will last a lifetime. Our mission is to teach, share, and preserve the concepts of math.

Meet the Founders

Michael Shi

Michael has done a variety of math competitions and courses throughout his career. This includes MATHCOUNTS (First Place Regional), AMC 8 (Honor Roll), MCML, NYSML, and AMC 10. He is a sophomore at Sutherland High School learning Calculus BC. Besides math, he has participated in the Regional and State competitions for Science Olympiad since 6th grade. In his spare time, Michael plays clarinets for the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, enjoys reading and creative writing, and runs for Sutherland's JV Cross Country team.

Matthew Xie

Matthew Xie is a junior at Pittsford Sutherland High school. He has completed many high school math courses and is currently taking Linear Algebra at the University of Rochester. Additionally, Matthew has participated in math competitions since sixth grade and has continued to participate in these such as the AMC 10, MCML, NYSML and PUMaC. Last year, Matthew obtained AIME and got honor roll for the AMC 10A. Within Sutherland, Matthew is a math captain for his school's Math League team and is a member of Sutherland's Varsity tennis team. In his free time, Matthew enjoys playing the violin for HYSO and video games.

Algebra 1

Emily Yu

I am a high school junior at Mendon High School, and am a captain for my school's math team. I have done math competitions since elementary school, and I attended MOP (Mathematical Olympiad Program) in 2023, am a 2023 USAJMO winner, and also I placed top 10 nationally at the 2022 and 2023 Math Prize for Girls competitions. Outside of math, I enjoy pole vaulting and I play violin for HYSO.

Mark Atalla

Hey, my name is Mark Atalla. I am a current high school senior at McQuaid Jesuit. In my free time I love to run, read a book and spend time with my pets. I also love to teach others, especially in mathematics which I have loved since a young age.

Algebra 2

Logan Canfield

My name is Logan Canfield, and I am in my senior year at McQuaid Jesuit. I've always been very interested in math, taking calculus, linear algebra, statistics, discrete mathematics, and various computer science classes throughout high school. I play clarinet in the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and I also participate in various competitions for piano. In my free time you can find me running cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track.

Aariv Mody

Hi! I'm Aariv Mody, a senior at Sutherland High School. I've loved math since I was young, and I want to spread this passion to other kids. I have participated in various math and science competitions in the past (Math League, Science Olympiad etc.) and am currently taking Linear Algebra at the University of Rochester. I've also tutored for Mathnasium for the past two years and enjoy working with students. For fun, I love to ski, play tennis, travel, and play the piano.
