The American Invitational Mathematics Exam is a 15 problem, 3 hour exam for the top scorers from the AMC 10 and 12. The AIME is typically held in the beginning of February and both the AIME I and AIME II are offered. Although AIME II is available, most students take the AIME I as the AIME II is primarily
an alternate test date for those who are unable to take the AIME I.
Both AIME I and AIME II are graded and weighted the same way, but with differing problem sets. For each question correct on the AIME, you will receive 10 points and each question wrong gives you 0 points. Unlike the AMCs, the AIME are all free-response questions with an answer from 000-999.
Advancement to the next stage, namely USAJMO and USAMO (United States of America Mathematics (Junior) Olympiad), requires qualifying scores on both the AMC 10 or 12 and the AIME. The composite score used for determining USAJMO and USAMO qualifiers is calculated by adding the AMC 10 or 12 and AIME scores for a maximum score of 300. In recent years, the cuto
ff for the USAJMO and USAMO have been around 200-210.
